Modern Simplicity
A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
— Antoine de Saint Exupéry
Simple shapes. Clean lines. Minimal construction.
This is how we describe modern design, but what does that actually mean? Modern design is about refined simplicity. We focus on the fundamental details and let everything else fall away. This approach is compelling because it puts a spotlight on the essential: by stripping away the inessential, you elevate the inherent beauty in the piece.
At Auda Sinda, we believe true beauty occurs when an object’s surface is in alignment with its essence.
The rug's physical appearance is in harmony with its design materiality, philosophy and purpose. We had the opportunity to put our philosophy into practice when we created a double width Twisp rug. In order to create this oversized piece, we had to pare down our Twisp 5 pattern to the essentials.
Our largest loom is 12’ wide.
Using a technique known as double width, we can make rugs twice as wide as our loom by weaving the rug folded in half. But double width has its limits; this technique only works with simpler designs. Twisp 5, a play of many subtle grids, is one of our most popular patterns. With precision, we streamlined our Twisp pattern so that we were able to use half the loom’s capabilities for one layer and the other half for the second layer.
The resulting rug retains the Twisp personality.
But now in a width up to 23’ wide. Our simplified Twisp shares all the essential characteristics of our original.
